(added 10/26/07) For the past four years, the Education Division has sponsored a writing competition for undergraduate students to bring attention to and promote the development of communication skills. Students were asked to write about any technical subject or recent development in food science that may be important to the consumer, using a non-technical writing style. This year’s first place award went to Masooma Zahed, a senior from Chapman University for a paper titled “Irradiation: Making Produce Healthy and Safe”. Her paper will be published in the Fall 2007 issue of the Journal of Food Science Education. Second place was awarded to Nicole Bergen, who has just finished her Junior year at the University of Alberta. Her paper was titled “Aflatoxin in the Food Supply: Is Canada Safe?” Andrew Draganski, from Michigan State University took third place for his paper “Understanding Dietary Fiber and its Potential Health Benefits”.
